How Much 108-Inch Wide Backing Do I Need?
Wide backing can turn a pieced back into a single cut, but “108 inches” on the label does not mean every quilt fits without a seam.
Use the width you can actually sew
Select “Wide-back (108″)” in the calculator. It starts at 104 usable inches to leave room for selvages, but that is a planning default. Measure your fabric and edit the field. If you prewash, use its expected or measured width after washing.
A single panel works when the usable fabric width covers at least one dimension of the backing rectangle. The other dimension becomes the length cut from the bolt. Rotating the layout may save fabric when the print and your quilting method permit it.
Queen-size example
A typical queen preset is 90 × 108 inches. With 4-inch overhang on each side, the required backing is 98 × 116 inches. At 104 usable inches, the width fits across the fabric, so cut one panel 116 inches long.
116 ÷ 36 is just over 3.22 yards. Rounded up, buy 3¼ yards, or independently 3.0 meters. There are no seams. The panel has 6 inches of spare width before final trimming, but the purchase rounding leaves only 1 inch beyond the 116-inch cut length. Add extra separately if the ends need substantial squaring.
Compare common quilt sizes
These examples all use 104 usable inches, 4-inch overhang per side, ½-inch seam allowances, and no shrinkage allowance. Measure your top instead of relying on a size name.
| Quilt top | Cuts | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Throw · 60 × 72 in | 1 × 68 in | 2 yd / 1.8 m |
| Queen · 90 × 108 in | 1 × 116 in | 3¼ yd / 3.0 m |
| King · 108 × 108 in | 2 × 116 in | 6½ yd / 5.9 m |
The throw uses the horizontal layout: its 80-inch backing length fits across the fabric, leaving a 68-inch cut length. “Horizontal” describes the orientation even when there is no seam. The king needs 116 inches in both directions, so a 104-inch usable width cannot cover it with one panel.
Check the print before accepting the shorter cut
A directional design may need to run a particular way relative to the quilt top. Compare the other layout if rotating would turn the design sideways. Print matching and motif placement are outside the calculator’s allowance.
When neither backing dimension fits the usable width, compare a pieced wide-back plan with standard fabric. The lower yardage is not automatically the lower price: multiply each plan’s shopping quantity by its own price per yard.
